BACKGROUND:
Each year, the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance solicits grant applications from state, local, and county law enforcement agencies across the country to help fund projects related to law enforcement, substance abuse programs, technology improvements, training, and other related projects. This year, the San Marcos Police Department is eligible to apply for funds in an amount not exceeding $15,763.00.
More than 10 years ago, the police department began a Cyber Forensics investigative program. This capability allows the department to conduct forensic examination of computers and peripheral devices seized as evidence of criminal offenses. The computer the department currently uses for the bulk of this work was purchased with a grant from the San Marcos Citizen's Police Academy Alumni Association approximately 5 years ago and is in need of replacement. Additionally, newly developed software is available which is more capable and state of the art than what is currently in use by the department.
