Background Information:
The Streets Division of the Public Works Department is responsible for maintaining 508 lane-miles of roadway, ensuring safe and reliable transportation for residents, businesses, and emergency services. Pothole repair is a critical function of the Streets Division, as deteriorating road conditions pose a risk to public safety, increase vehicle maintenance costs for residents, and contribute to long-term infrastructure degradation. To enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of pothole patching operations, the purchase of a 3-yard dump truck is recommended.
A dedicated 3-yard dump truck will significantly improve the Streets Division’s ability to respond to pothole repair needs in a timely and effective manner. The truck’s capacity will allow for the transportation of necessary materials, such as hot mix asphalt, while reducing the number of trips required to resupply. This will lead to increased productivity, minimized downtime, and more effective utilization of department personnel and resources. Additionally, a properly equipped dump truck will enable crews to perform year-round pothole patching, improving road conditions and reducing hazards for motorists and pedestrians.
During winter months and other inclement weather conditions, the 3-yard dump truck will serve as a critical asset for road safety operations. The truck can be outfitted with a sand spreader, ensuring that roadways remain navigable for emergency services and the public. By having a versatile vehicle that can be utilized for both pothole patching and snow and ice control, the City will maximize its investment while enhancing public safety and mobility during adverse weather events.
Major Benefits to the City:
• Enhanced Efficiency: A dedicated dump truck will enable more streamlined and efficient pothole patching operations, reducing repair times and improving service delivery.
• Cost Savings: By reducing the need for frequent trips to resupply patching materials, fuel and labor costs will be minimized.
• Improved Roadway Conditions: Regular and timely pothole repairs will lead to smoother roads, reducing vehicle wear and tear for residents and businesses.
• Increased Public Safety: By maintaining safe road conditions and ensuring accessibility during inclement weather, the City will help prevent accidents and delays for emergency responders.
• Long-Term Infrastructure Preservation: Proactive maintenance will extend the lifespan of roadways, ultimately reducing the need for costly large-scale repairs in the future.
The purchase of a 3-yard dump truck is a cost-effective investment for the City’s Streets Division. This vehicle will allow for more efficient pothole patching operations while serving as a key asset for winter weather response. By improving roadway conditions and enhancing public safety, this purchase aligns with the City’s commitment to maintaining a reliable and well-maintained transportation network. City Council approval of this acquisition is requested to ensure that the necessary resources are in place to effectively maintain the City’s infrastructure year-round.
This procurement is authorized through Local Government Code, Chapter 271, which allows the City to participate in cooperative purchasing programs such as the Sourcewell cooperative contract. This purchase is being made through Sourcewell contract #060920-NVS.
