Background Information:
The Great Springs Project (GSP) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization formed to help create a network of spring-to-spring trails and a corridor of protected lands over the Edwards Aquifer recharge zone, between San Antonio and Austin. This green corridor will be connected by a 100-mile network of spring-to-spring trails, linking four of Texas’ Great Springs: Barton Springs, San Marcos Springs, Comal Springs, and San Antonio Springs. Through collaboration with their many partners, GSP unifies and supports existing local efforts and catalyzes new effort to address the most critical water, land, wildlife, and public health and equity challenges facing the Central Texas region. The City of San Marcos has been an active partner through staff’s service on the Trail Steering Committee.
In December of 2024, GSP submitted a proposal to the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (CAMPO) Transportation Alternatives grant program to develop a study for a shared use path or trail along Hunter Road from San Marcos to the Hays/Comal County line and funding for the study was awarded this June.
They are now working with CAMPO to complete the administrative tasks needed to kick the project off this fall. One of those tasks is an interlocal agreement between GSP and CAMPO, which will serve as the basis of their partnership for the study. Since part of the project is in San Marcos, CAMPO has asked that the City of San Marcos acknowledge their support and coordination role in the study by endorsing the agreement by The agreement between CAMPO and GSP is attached for reference. Please see the acknowledgment section on the signature pages of the attached agreement.
There is no obligation or request of the City of San Marcos to cost participate in this study.
