Background Information
:

The Arts Commission brought forth the idea of a Mermaid March in approximately 2015.  The Mermaid March is a public art project that celebrates the art, culture and natural beauty of San Marcos. The intent was to enhance San Marcos as a tourist destination, to provide a source of pride for citizens and to showcase the wealth of talent within our creative economy

The Mermaid Sculptures were designed and produced locally by The Fountain People.

Artists were then chosen to design and paint the sculptures for public display.

Section 2.361.(e) requires the City Council to make the final decision on the funding and locations for permanent display art.

The attached information details the location of each mermaid and which mermaid will be placed at that location.

City staff from the Parks and Recreation Department, Transportation Department, and Main Street walked these areas and examined them for safety and ADA accessibility.  All were found to be appropriate.

Council Committee, Board/Commission Action:
The Arts Commission approved these locations by consensus at their January 19, 2018 meeting.  Park locations were approved by the Parks Advisory Board at their December 14, 2017 meeting.
