Background Information:

The Rio Vista swimming pool has served the San Marcos community since its opening on May 31, 1975. The last major improvements were completed in 2005, which included installation of a new filtration system and the addition of the splash pad. A new filtration system was purchased and installed in early 2023 to maintain water quality and operational efficiency.

While routine maintenance and repairs have extended the life of the current plaster and surface, these measures are no longer a viable long-term solution. Pool plaster and surfacing are critical components of a swimming pool’s structure and safety. The plaster provides a smooth, watertight finish that protects the underlying concrete shell. Over time, plaster deteriorates due to constant exposure to water, chemicals, and environmental conditions, leading to rough surfaces, cracks, and potential leaks. These issues can pose safety hazards for swimmers, including abrasions and tripping risks, and compromise the integrity of the pool.

What’s the difference between replastering and resurfacing?

Replastering involves applying a new layer of plaster to restore the pool’s smooth, watertight finish.

Resurfacing is a broader process that includes replastering but also involves the installation of tile for improved durability and aesthetics.

To ensure the pool remains safe, functional, and ready for community use, staff is requesting approval of a contract with Landmark Aquatic for the replastering and resurfacing of the Rio Vista swimming pool. The project is expected to take 4-6 weeks, depending on weather conditions, and will be completed in time for the 2026 summer season.
