Background Information:

In accordance with the attached City Council policy for the naming of City Parks and Facilities, staff is submitting the attached request from the San Marcos Greenbelt Alliance (SMGA) to formally name the tract commonly known as the “Buie Tract,” the “River Recharge Natural Area”.

Under the current policy only names submitted to the City Manager shall be considered by the City Council.  It is due to the provision that this request has not been provided to the Parks and Recreation Board for discussion or recommendation prior to coming before the City Council.

To help assist City Council in discussion of this request the following would be possible options:

1.                     Approve the recommendation as submitted

2.                     Modify the recommendation

3.                     Defer to the Parks and Recreation Board for recommendation

4.                     Do nothing

Alternatives:

Staff did provide SMGA with the preference of the name “Recharge Natural Area” due to its double meaning (recharge by way of relaxation and being over the recharge zone) and shorter name

Recommendation:

Parks and Recreation Staff is not opposed to this request and did meet with members of SMGA to brainstorm possible options prior to their board voting on this recommendation.
