Arts Master Plan
Background Information:
The large compass sundial, located opposite The Learning Tree in Prospect Park’s lower meadow, provides seating and educational opportunities.
The outdoor art piece was installed by the San Marcos Greenbelt Alliance in 2009. After sixteen years, the structure has sustained extensive damage and is now considered unrepairable.
The San Marcos Arts Commission proposes to replace the existing structure with a new installation that maintains the original sundial theme while reimagining the piece as an interactive work of art.
This project supports tourism and creative placemaking by adding to the City’s public art collection.
Council Committee, Board/Commission Action:
The Arts Commission voted in 2023 to propose a replacement of the sundial in Prospect Park Natural Area. The natural areas are managed by the Parks and Recreation Department. The Commission and staff met with Parks and Recreation staff to discuss options. In 2025, the Commission approved a total project budget of $50,000. In February 2026, the Arts Commission allocated $15,000 for the artist fee and up to $35,000 reserved for materials and installation.
Alternatives:
Remove the sundial due to lack of general funds.
Recommendation:
Staff recommendation is to move forward with the art project.
