Background Information:
If approved, this item authorizes the Mayor to sign onto a joint letter from the City of San Marcos and Texas State University to United States Secretary of Labor to Secretary of Labor Walsh requesting a point-of-contact to work through various issues related to Gary Job Corps (GJC) and the Department of Labor (DOL). Those projects include:
• Texas State’s ongoing communications with DOL about transferring the ownership of the land to the ALERRT Center at Texas State University.
• The City’s and DOL’s multi-year improvement plan to create a new roadway into GJC and the neighboring city-owned San Marcos Regional Airport. We need to conclude these discussions in order to begin construction on the state-funded FM 110.
• The disposition of some existing excess GJC property that may be declared surplus. These discussions include the City, University and DOL.
The letter requests Secretary Walsh’s assistance to streamline ongoing discussions regarding these projects and provide a specific point-person within DOL that will serve as the primary contact on all things related to GJC moving forward.
