Council Committee, Board/Commission Action:
The City of San Marcos adopted the 2021 International Fire Code in 2023, including a section that requires automatic sprinklers be retroactively added to facilities with an occupant load of 300 people or more where alcohol is consumed (2021 IFC 1103.5, 1103.5.1). Cuauhtemoc Hall is in this category.

Also in 2023, City Council designated a total of $165,000 in freed up General Funds (Coronavirus Relief Funds) to install sprinkler systems in Cuauhtémoc Hall and the VFW Hall. Additional funding received from the Compliance Engine for fire protection system inspections is proposed to make up the difference since estimates have increased over the past year and a half. This combined funding is expected to cover the cost of the sprinkler systems. The estimated cost of the installation for Cuauhtemoc Hall is $120,000.

The Fire Department has been in discussions with Cuauhtemoc Hall to ensure continued progress toward the installation of an automatic sprinkler system. Installation of the sprinkler system at Cuauhtémoc Hall was on hold pending completion of an interior remodel by La Sociedad Mutualista Cuauhtémoc, which needed to occur first. Now that the remodel is complete, the sprinkler upgrades can be installed.
