Background Information:

The purpose of this resolution is to complete the purchase of the piece of property described in the agenda caption as discussed with Council on April 19 and July 5, 2022. This piece of property is for the relocation of Fire Station #1, which is currently located at 114 E, Hutchison to this location, 111 E. MLK. Existing Station 1 was opened in 1968 and currently houses an engine, ambulance, battalion chief, and the Department’s heavy-rescue/light/air truck.

The facility is outdated, and is functionally and structurally inadequate for our current needs. The apparatus bays are too small to adequately house modern aerial fire apparatus (ladder trucks) and the restrooms, living, and dorm areas are insufficient. The new station, when constructed, will be built to accommodate one or two fire engines and a ladder truck, an ambulance, battalion chief’s vehicle, and either a specialized response vehicle (haz-mat or heavy rescue) or a reserve fire apparatus. Timing of the construction of this facility is undetermined at this time.
