Background Information:
In 2025, the City of San Marcos experienced several violent crimes in the Downtown Square. To provide increased police presence during high-activity periods, Texas State University seeks to establish an MOU that will govern the disbursement of $150,000 to the City to support full-time staffing of the Square with a dedicated team of SMPD officers.
The dedicated team of officers were permanently assigned to the Downtown Square on January 3, 2026. TXST University Police Department (UPD) is providing funds of $150,000 to be used to support this team, while UPD also works to assign an officer(s) to the Downtown Square on high-activity nights - Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.
This MOU will be in effect through June 30, 2026. The parties intend that, beginning with the Fall 2026 semester, TXST PD will provide personnel support in lieu of direct funding.
