Background Information:

The San Marcos Cinema Club approached the San Marcos Convention and Visitor Bureau requesting support to name an unnamed alley in Downtown San Marcos to celebrate the film and movie industry in San Marcos.  The award-winning movie, Boyhood, includes an iconic scene filmed in the proposed alley which features the Hays County Courthouse as the backdrop. Award winning director, Richard Linklater, has filmed two major projects in San Marcos.

Chapter 74 Division 2 covers the process for street name changes.  However, alleys are not currently named so the code process is not applicable.  The requested name change was taken through both the Convention & Visitors Bureau and the Main Street Board for recommendation.  The Main Street Board did not support the naming to Boyhood Alley.

Council Committee, Board/Commission Action:
San Marcos Convention and Visitor Bureau, during the July 20, 2022 meeting, unanimously voted in favor of submitting a resolution to city council to name a downtown alley as Boyhood Alley.

Recommendation:

The recommendation from the Convention and Visitor Bureau Advisory Board and Staff is to support the naming of the unnamed alley to Boyhood Alley.  The naming of the unnamed alley is an opportunity to celebrate San Marcos’ Film Friendly designation and the multitude of movies filmed in our beautiful city.

Staff will work with building owners and tenants adjacent to the alley to create educational opportunities of the Boyhood movie and other cinematic projects filmed in San Marcos.  Www.visitsanmarcos.com/media/film <http://Www.visitsanmarcos.com/media/film> currently lists movies filmed in San Marcos including Everybody Wants Some, another Richard Linklater project.  A page will be created to highlight Boyhood Alley and educate the public of the significance of the name.
