BACKGROUND

The Fire Department purchased over a two year period, 2012 and 2013, Mobile Data Terminals (MDT) to outfit each fire truck and departmental vehicle. The manufactures warranty on the MDTs either expired or will expire in March 2016.

The MDT allowed for the following:

                     The MDCs provide emergency responders with initial and updated dispatch information without having to tie up the radio channel with non-emergency communications.

                     They also provide our firefighters with access to numerous mapping features which allows them to locate the dispatched address quickly and identify the nearest fire hydrant(s).

                     They allow our officers to access pre-fire plans which help them to better understand building features, the presence of fixed fire protection systems (sprinklers/standpipes), and any hazardous materials or industrial processes which might necessitate a change is strategy.

                     They allow our officers to collect information for their reports directly from the patient on EMS calls or from the owner/occupant on various types of fires and motor vehicle accidents.

                     The MDCs provide our responders with internet access that they can use to access numerous web-sites including hazardous materials guidebooks and weather conditions.

The Fire Department will be utilizing the State of Texas, Department of Information Resources (DIR) contract number DIR-SDD-1951 to purchase Dell Ruggedized Latitudes laptops for a total amount of $68,736.62.
