Big Picture Infrastructure
BACKGROUND:
The Texas Department of Transportation (TXDOT) was awarded $13.4 million in Safety Bond money to improve the intersection of State Highway 123 and Wonder World Drive. The proposed improvement project will provide a new overpass over Wonder World Drive. As a result of the TXDOT roadway improvements, existing City of San Marcos water and wastewater lines will need to be relocated and/or adjusted. The City and TXDOT are required to execute a Standard Utility Agreement for any relocations within an existing easement to be reimbursed.
The total anticipated project cost for the City's relocation work is $2,842,469.00 for design, construction and easement acquisitions. Of this amount, this agreement will require TXDOT to reimburse $2,591,641.73 and the City will be responsible for the remaining $250,827.27. This $250k will be partially used for the current design contract and allocated in award of the construction contract. The City will be required to front these cost but can begin making reimbursement requests to TXDOT as soon as this agreement is executed.
The intersection improvements will begin approximately 500' south of De Zavala Dr. and extend south approximately 6,100 feet. The project will expand the existing right-of-way from generally 130' to 245' with the additional right-of-way acquired from the west side of SH 123. TXDOT has awarded the construction project to Hunter Industries in the amount of $11,596,550.48, and they are expected to start construction as soon as all utility relocation work is completed in the Spring/Summer of 2015.
